Why location matters more than you think... well, ideally we can make many spots around Oahu work for family photographs. I've grown up here my entire life. I have been taking photographs at these places for over 20 years and have found out a few key elements that make any spot good. Great lighting, protection from the wind (as much as possible), crowd levels and backgrounds.

Waialae Beach (Kahala) — best for all-around reliability

Wind protection, parking, morning and evening light. Great for all ages. Closest beach to the Kahala Hotel. The light in the winter time, in the afternoon is magical. Park at the hotel and plan a dinner there or sit and have a cocktail while you laugh about how fun our shoot just was.

Magic Island / Ala Moana Beach Park — best for sunsets and easy access

Large groups, easy parking, flexible lighting throughout the day. Good for extended families and multi-generational sessions. City skyline views. Easy access to Waikiki, Kakaako and Ala Moana for dinner or brunch afterwards!

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden — best non-beach option

Lush, green, dramatic Ko'olau mountain backdrop. Free entry. Permit required for commercial photography — Nicole handles this. Great for families who don't want a "beach photo" look.

Kaka'ako murals — best for creative / urban family photos

Bold colors, artistic walls, totally different from a beach session. Works great for families with teens or those wanting a more editorial look. Best in morning light before crowds depending on your mural preferences.

How to choose the right location for your family

Still not sure? I have many other spots that we can explore! Tell me about your family, where you are staying and time of day you want to take photos and I'll suggest the perfect spot.
